Five people were killed and eight others injured in a house fire in Beijing’s Chaoyang District on Wednesday, local authorities have said.
The fire, which broke out at around 1:18 a.m., was reportedly triggered by two electric bicycles, said the fire department.
Cai Qi, secretary of the Communist Party of China (CPC) Beijing Municipal Committee, and Chen Jining, acting mayor of Beijing, inspected the fire scene and visited the injured in hospital.
The fire occurred less than a month after a dorm fire caused by short circuit killed 19 in the city's southern district of Daxing on November 18.
