Two German nationals have been detained in Turkey “for political reasons,” a spokeswoman for the German foreign ministry said on Friday, bringing the total number of German political prisoners in Turkish custody to 12.

The spokeswoman said she believed the two were apprehended on Friday, and noted that the Turkish authorities had not immediately informed Germany about the arrests.

"I can't say whether it happened upon arrival at the airport or not."

She said Berlin is yet to establish contact with the individuals concerned.
