I'm here in Songguanmiao village, to explore how China is driving toward its last mile, which is to eradicate rural poverty by 2020. And in my opinion, out of all the villages I've been to, this is one village that is a good test case. The government has provided schools to up skills of local inhabitants, so they're up to date with local agricultural techniques. As you can see, there's a lot of developed agricultural land, there's planting of oranges, and a wide range of crops, so the villagers can take advantage of the market opportunities as they arise.
And above that, the government is also providing subsidies for refurbishment and help them to relocate from parts of the country that are unsafe and give them shelters.
That is one example of a house that's been recently renovated.
ZHENG YIWEN, RESIDENT SONGGUANMIAO VILLAGE, SICHUAN PROVINCE "We built this house more than twenty years ago and it was too old, so the government helped to paint the walls."
ZAHRA ROJI BAITIE CHINA DIRECTOR, DEVELOPMENT REIMAGINED "The changes in the village is impressive and I'm looking forward to seeing how this village is going to develop and reaches its last mile, a village with zero poverty."
