United Nations Secretary-General Antonio Guterres is encouraged by planned talks between US President Donald Trump and Kim Jong Un, the leader of the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK), a spokesman said on Friday.
The White House confirmed Thursday that Trump has agreed to meet Kim in a couple of months at the invitation of the DPRK leader.
"The secretary-general is encouraged by the announcement of an agreement between the United States and the Democratic People's Republic of Korea to hold a summit meeting by May," Stephane Dujarric, the spokesman for Guterres, said in a statement.
"He commends the leadership and vision of all concerned and reiterates his support for all efforts towards peaceful denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula in accordance with relevant Security Council resolutions."
Chinese President Xi Jinping held a phone conversation with US President Donald Trump on Friday over the Korean Peninsula issue and status of Sino-US ties.
In the phone call,
President Xi acknowledged the positive changes in inter-Korean relations and said China will persist with the goal of denuclearizing the Korean Peninsula and solving the issue through dialogue and negotiation.
