Just a few years, a biotechnology zone in Wuhan, the capital of central China's Hubei province, has become the second largest of its kind in the country. The Chinese government has recognised the potential of this emerging industry and is giving it its full support. Our reporter Xia Ruixue visited the zone in Wuhan to find out more about the industry's rise.
When Wang Qi discovered Wuhan was to create a specialized biotechnology zone nine years ago, he decided to shift his biomedical electronics company out of Shenzhen. He feels it was an inspired decision.
WANG QI, CEO WUHAN ZONCARE BIOMEDICAL ELECTRONICS "After we relocated here, the government helped us recruit talent, so we now have our own R&D team. Now our color doppler ultrasonography sets are being sold to more than 70 countries. Last year, one of our electro-cardiographs won the RedDot award."
Wuhan's Biotech Zone has been emphasizing the concept of innovation since its inception. And perhaps this is why it has attracted more than 12-hundred biomedical companies. Humanwell Healthcare is one of them. Its drugs have been approved by the US Food and Drug Administration, as well as the European Union. They're sold worldwide, and that's something its chief couldn't have imagined just a few years ago.
WANG XUEHAI, CEO HUMANWELL HEALTHCARE GROUP "Here, in the zone, the local authorities try to speed-up drug approvals. So it takes less time for us to get the products into the market. I think this is also a kind of innovation."
Biotechnology is one of the seven strategic emerging industries that the Chinese government earmarked in its current Five-Year Plan.
QIAN DEPING, VICE DIRECTOR CONSTRUCTION & MANAGEMENT OFFICE, WUHAN BIOTECH ZONE "Innovation needs money and talent. Our job is to introduce favorable policies to expand our talent bank, and to provide financial assistance to the companies in the zone."
China's economy is gradually adapting to its "new normal" state, with slower, but more stable growth. Wuhan's Biotech Zone is a classic example of how the government's new policies which center around innovation can be the new driving force for the Chinese economy. Xia Ruixue, CGTN, Wuhan, Hubei province.
