The subject of "fake news" has sparked wide debate for a long time with many people balancing the issue along the thin line of comedy versus complications. Recently Malaysia took a stance against fake news and has approved a new law banning fake news with potential offenders facing up to six years in prison and fines of up to 500,000 ringgit (129,000 US dollars).
The Malaysian government's bill defines fake news as “news, information, data and reports which is or are wholly or partly false.” This includes features, visuals and audio recordings. Not only does the new bill include social media platforms but also digital publications. The new move has brought to life the debate on whether fake news is purely humorous or potentially damaging.
