Many people around the world watched the dazzling 2008 Beijing Olympics' opening ceremony, with a lot of attention on an ancient Chinese instrument. The musician, China’s renowned guqin player Chen Leiji, played a copy of a 1,000-year-old instrument from the Tang Dynasty (618 – 907). The history of the guqin spans 3,000 years to the Zhou Dynasty (1046 BC – 771 BC).
