Isak Bester, 50, was choking on a piece of steak at a barbecue in North Island of New Zealand. Sarah Glass, 45, Isak’s girlfriend is a midwife. She calmly sliced open her boyfriend’s windpipe with a Stanley knife and then gave him CPR and mouth- to-mouth to save his life.
“He was turning completely purple. We needed to get some air into him and the piece of steak was moving. He was dying in front of us.” Sarah told the Daily Mail Australia.

The Hawke's Bay woman yelled out if anyone had a sharp object to puncture a hole in his windpipe.
“I felt relief when I was handed the blade. He was lying in a puddle of blood. I didn't notice until my friend handed me a flannel that I was covered in his blood.” said Sarah.

She preformed a tracheotomy on her partner, a procedure she had studied in her 20s, and used a syringe from a home-birthing kit to keep the airway open.
The off-duty midwife then used an oxygen tank which was also in her kit to bring him back to color.
20 minutes later a paramedic arrived and Mr Bester was airlifted to hospital 30 minutes after he began choking. He was released from hospital 7 days later and is on his way to making a full recovery.
