Preventable pregnancy-related deaths rising in the US
[]
Childbirth marks the beginning of a life. But for some mothers, it leads to the end of theirs.
Hundreds of women in the US die every year from pregnancy or delivery-related complications, and the number of such deaths is rising. In other rich nations, the maternal death rate is falling.
According to the Centers for Disease Control, more than half of these deaths are preventable.
Researchers suggest because babies are still far more likely to die in childbirth than mothers, healthcare providers focus more on keeping newborns healthy. When something goes wrong, many doctors and other professionals are unprepared.
