The Egyptian Football Association has apologised for the Pharaohs' performance in Russia. The FA's president, Hani Abo Reda, is also promising to get new coaches who will prepare the team better, ahead of future competitions. He reiterated that the team made its base in the region of Chechnya for logistal purposes, as well, while vowing to look into allegations of rules breaches by players and corruption by officials. CGTN's Adel EL Mahrouky reports from Cairo.
After a harsh three matches defeat in the FIFA World Cup, the Egyptian National Team and Football association have returned. With rumors spreading about player's violations, disputes and allegations of corruption, the President of the EFA decided to hold a press conference to explain the facts. The fury that chased the national team from fans in Russia was waiting for Hani Abo Reda in Cairo.
HANI ABO REDA EGYPTIAN F.A. PRESIDENT "Of course everyone in this hall is upset. Everyone who cares about football is upset over the performance the team presented in the World Cup. Especially the last two matches. I owe nothing to you except an apology. Everyone who followed the team was hoping to see a better team."
The EFA faced severe criticism for basing the team in Chechnya. A move that tormented Liverpool's startMohamed Salah and the national team in Western Media. Abo Reda stressed that the decision was purely for logistical purposes and that the Association, as a sports entity, does not get involved in politics.
"Why did we chose Grozny? Because in any other city, the airport is at least 45 minutes away. In Grozny, it's seven minutes. There the training pitch was right next to the hotel. We were the only national team there, so all the city resources was available for us. The city is 50 minutes away from the venue of our last match, a time we knew the national team would be exhausted. We made the arrangements to stay there, then we started seeing the concerns about the political situation there. But we are a sports team, we do not get involved in politics."
Accusations of corruption hammered EFA members. One board members lost his temper, as inquires about him looting the team's sportswear were made.
ADEL EL MAHROUKY CAIRO "The Egyptian Football Association has tried to diffuse the anger spread among the Egyptian nation because of the poor performance of the Pharaohs in the World Cup. Instead many are saying that Hani Abo Reda has fueled this anger."
AYMAN GELBERTO SPORTS ANALYST "It was a courageous move by Hani Abo Reda to hold the press conference on the next day of the team's arrival. The conference failed to meet its purpose. I think after what we've heard today, the demands for the EFA's resignation will become lounder. More people are angry now."
The EFA says it will not renew the contract for Coach Hector Cuper. A list of foreign coaches is being reviewed and a new leader for the Pharaohs will be announced soon. Meanwhile an investigation will begin to look into the corruption allegations and complaints that surround the entire team. Adel EL Mahrouky, CGTN, Cairo.
