In Venice, a cruise ship carrying more than 25-hundred passengers smashed into a tourist boat and a dock on Sunday morning. The accident injured four people. It comes as some residents are demanding an end to big cruise liners in the historic city. CGTN's Toby Muse has more.
It's the stuff of nautical nightmares - an out of control cruise ship bearing down on a pier and people running for their lives. The MSC Opera collided with a dock and another boat in the Italian city on Sunday. The accident injured four people, according to the local port authority. The 275-meter- long ship was coming into dock at the Giudecca canal when the boat suffered engine failure and lost control.
JACOPO VENICE RESIDENT "It is a shameful situation. But in bad luck, they were lucky, it could have been much worse."
The Opera was being guided by two tugboats but weren't able to prevent the crash. Port authorities believe one of the cables connecting the cruise liner and the smaller boat snapped, making the boat lose control. MSC Cruises, the ship's owner, released a statement saying an investigation is underway into the "exact causes of the events". Adding, the company is working closely with local maritime and other authorities. Some residents are calling for an end to the big cruise liners in Venice, saying the city is too small to handle them. Toby Muse, CGTN.
