US President Donald Trump signed legislation last week which encourages visits between American and Taiwan officials at all levels. This is a move that China is strongly dissatisfied with and firmly opposes. Our reporter Zou Yun talked to NPC deputies from the Taiwan delegation and listened to their views on this matter.
Anger spreads among NPC deputies from the Taiwan delegation when they first heard the news about the US bill. Liang Zhiqiang is one of those deputies. He told CGTN the one-China principle is the political foundation on which China and the US established diplomatic ties. And now the Trump administration is clearly violating this principle.
LIANG ZHIQIANG NPC DEPUTY OF TAIWAN DELEGATION "Interactions between countries is like that between people. They should keep their words and fulfill their commitments. Even though the US government claimed this act is not legally binding, it still sent the wrong signal. Taiwan-related issues are core issues of interest to China, I think we should fight back if our core interests get harmed and our domestic affairs interfered with."
The Chinese Foreign Ministry has expressed strong dissatisfaction with, as well as firm opposition to, the act. It has also lodged stern representations with the US side. Meanwhile, the NPC deputies from the Taiwan delegation said the move by the US is not helping anyone.
CAI PEIHUI NPC DEPUTY OF TAIWAN DELEGATION "It's like lifting a stone only to drop it on your own feet. This would break the peace and stability of China across the Taiwan Strait. It also violates the Three Joint Communiqués between China and the US. We strongly oppose it."
ZOU YUN BEIJING "Chinese senior officials have reiterated that The Travel Act sends out very wrong signals to pro-independence separatist forces in Taiwan. The officials say if the mistake doesn't get corrected, it will cause severe damage to China-US relations and cross-Strait stability. ZY, CGTN, BJ."
