On the sidelines of the summit, Indonesia's trade minister sat down with our correspondent Miro Lu. He spoke about Indonesia's role in the region.
ENGGARTIASTO LUKITA MINISTER OF TRADE OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA "One thing is we have to redo, make the analysis. How much is the benefit for Indonesia of course without U.S. in the TPP itself. The other things we discussed that we ASEAN, the six ASEAN countries trying to get information from the four ASEAN (countries) which have already joined CPTPP, and then afterwards, we are trying to make one understanding within the ASEAN countries itself if we are going to join the CPTPP."
MIRO LU SINGAPORE "Indonesia is pushing to complete negotiations for the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP) this year. Singapore, as the rotating ASEAN chair country, has also pinpointed RCEP as one of the deliverables. So what are the remaining sticking points in the negotiation?"
ENGGARTIASTO LUKITA MINISTER OF TRADE OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA "It's not Indonesia and Singapore, the whole ASEAN, we agree that we are trying to finalize within this year. ASEAN, we are trying to make a bridge among the ASEAN partners. Some of the ASEAN partners they never have FTA. I think we have some solution."
MIRO LU SINGAPORE "Earlier this month, the world was gripped by a trade dispute between the United States and China, two of ASEAN's largest trading partners. Indonesia as ASEAN's largest economy, are you worried about a potential trade war?"
ENGGARTIASTO LUKITA MINISTER OF TRADE OF THE REPUBLIC OF INDONESIA "I am not going to use the terminology of war. I am not worried. But we have to be more careful about the process itself. We hope that it won't be like a trade war between those two big countries."
