US President Donald Trump has ruled out the use of the so-called "Libya model" in efforts to pursue denuclearization of the Korean Peninsula. He says it's not the model for the talks with Pyongyang.
DONALD TRUMP US PRESIDENT "Well, the Libyan model isn't a model that we have at all when we're thinking of North Korea. In Libya we decimated that country. That country was decimated. There was no deal to keep Kadhafi. The Libyan model that was mentioned was a much different deal. This would be with Kim Jong Un, something where he'd be there, he'd be in his country, he'd be running his country. His country would be very rich."
Trump's remarks come after Pyongyang said it may reconsider the scheduled US-DPRK summit because of provocative remarks made by Trump's National Security Advisor John Bolton. Bolton put Pyongyang on alert recently. He said denuclearization should follow the Libya model followed by its leader Muammar Gaddafi. Gaddafi gave up atomic weapons and was later killed in a US-backed uprising. Despite the DPRK's threat to cancel, the White House remains somewhat upbeat about the June summit in Singapore.
