New Energy: Electric cars help curb China's oil consumption
Updated 15:22, 11-Sep-2019
Today, you'll find more cars on China's roads than on any other country's. And even though the nation continues working toward clean energy, most vehicles on the road still burn gas and oil. Yet a revolution is happening in the auto industry, which may change the landscape of the energy market forever. Ning Hong has more.
In the last four years, China has sold more electric cars than any other country. In 2018, the number of new energy vehicles nationwide reached 2.61 million. It only accounts for a little more one percent of all vehicles in China, but a million new energy cars were sold last year - a 70% jump from 2017.
In China's recently-announced evaluation standard of new energy vehicles, the energy consumption of new energy vehicles was regarded as one of three main aspects.
OUYANG MINGGAO,ACADEMICIAN CHINESE ACADEMY OF SCIENCES "More than 60% of the technology in electric vehicles comes from batteries, and the specific energy of ion batteries has risen from 100 watt-hours per kilogram to 300 watt-hours per kilogram over the past decade. The cost has been reduced from five Yuan to one Yuan. This process has undergone a revolutionary change, and this opportunity has been seized by China."
The latest World Energy Outlook released by the International Energy Agency indicates that oil use in cars will peak in the mid-2020s. Some 300 million electric cars on the road will avoid 3.3 million barrels of oil demand in 2040. And by the end of 2018, China already had over 2 million purely electric cars on the road. The Improvements in the efficiency of the non-electric car fleet will avoid over 9 million barrels of oil per day by 2040.
SUN FENGCHUN, ACADEMICIAN CHINESE ACADEMY OF ENGINEERING "Our overall technical level is at the international advanced level. For example, endurance mileage is basically more than 400 kilometers."
As the world's top new-energy car producer, China has begun to explore new energy sources. In the 13th Five-Year Plan of strategic emerging industries, the development of hydrogen fuel cells is also underway. Ning Hong, CGTN Beijing.
