A milestone event will hit Hong Kong later this fall. That's when some of the most beautiful artwork that bridges eastern and western styles can be yours for the seeing, and possibly even the taking. CGTN's Li Jiejun gives us a glimpse.
LI JIEJUN HONG KONG "Christie's Autumn Auction descends on Hong Kong in November. The gavel will pound for a series of museum-quality masterpieces in the world of art and luxury, including the most valuable selection of auction works ever to be exhibited for the Asian public."
REBECCA WEI, PRESIDENT CHRISTIE'S ASIA "Christie's has been in Asia for more than 30 years. But this time, the exhibition is very special."
One item that will go up for bid - David Hockney's masterpiece Portrait of an Artist, also known as Pool with Two Figures. Representing a culminating apex of the artist's two most celebrated motifs - the glistening water of a swimming pool and a double portrait, the work is an iconic image in Hockney's diverse oeuvre. With an estimated price of 80 million US dollars, it is poised to become the most valuable work of art by a living artist ever sold at auction. Meanwhile, several other quintessential 20th century canvases have Christie's calling this a milestone exhibition.
REBECCA WEI, PRESIDENT CHRISTIE'S ASIA "This is the highest value auction exhibition ever had in Hong Kong history. You see the famous pieces, like David Hockney's Pool With Two Figures, and Edward Hoppers work behind me, which is a masterpiece of the artist, and probably the only piece at that quality available in the market today. And you also have De Kooning to my left. These are all the masterpieces we are putting together for the season."
Works on offer include an exciting mix of Western and Asian novelties, encompassing key categories of Asian 20th Century and Contemporary Art, Chinese paintings and ceramics. Crowning the season are masterpieces like Wood and Rock by Su Shi, which will lead a pioneering sale that unites a cross-category of Asian arts. Other highlights include works from Chinese painters Chu Teh-Chun, Zao Wou-ki and Zeng Fanzhi. Meanwhile, audiences can feast their eyes on a full array of luxury items like magnificent jewels, handbags and accessories. This sapphire necklace is expected to set a new record in auction history.
VICKIE SEK, CHAIRMAN JEWELLERY, CHRISTIE'S ASIA "The peacock necklace is the rarest item in auction history. There are 21 pieces of Kashmir sapphire, total of 109 karat. The quality is very top. A Kashmir sapphire is very rare, because the mine has been finished in 1888."
By offering the very best works from artists around the world, experts are optimistic about the upcoming auction. Having witnessed strong buyer demand in the first half of the year, insiders believe the enthusiasm will continue November 23rd to the 28th, when the auction takes place at Christie's. LJJ, CGTN, HK.
