Now let's turn to the topic of wildlife protection. China has made tremendous efforts in conserving the giant panda species. One NPC deputy who has been devoting herself in the field for nearly 30 years. What else can we do to protect this vulnerable cute bear? CGTN's reporter Liu Yang brings us more.
These giant pandas have existed for millions of years. But today, just over 1,800 remain in the wild, with about 500 in captivity in China. Their cuteness catches many people's hearts, including that of NPC deputy Hou Rong. In fact, giant panda lovers affectionately call her the "giant pandas mom". She's been working on saving the species for decades.
HOU RONG NPC DEPUTY "When I first started my career, I set a goal: before my retirement in 40 years, giant pandas would have a self-sustaining captive population. However, in the last 20 years, medical technology has helped us reach that goal early."
Hou says she's grateful for the breeding scientific research that scientists have focused on in recent years. Without the protection for ecosystems and scientific advancements, the species could be even closer to extinction, given the low birth rate among Giant Pandas.
HOU RONG NPC DEPUTY "In the 1980s, over 100 giant pandas died of starvation and disease. The total number of wild giant pandas dropped to one thousand in the 1980s from three thousand in the 70s. Our scientists treated six sick giant pandas in 1987, and since then, the Giant Panda Chengdu research base has raised 195 captive giant pandas."
Hou says habitat fragmentation is the most significant concern facing the species. The essential functions of a delegate are to legislate or change laws. She says she will continue to push for legislation on Giant Panda National Parks in the coming years. The country's first giant panda national park will cover 27,100 square kilometres and span parts of Sichuan, Gansu and Shaanxi provinces. However, the completion could take years.
HOU RONG NPC DEPUTY "The protection needs the help of the law, such as prohibiting poaching, mining and road construction, those things must be strictly observed by law enforcement."
The Chengdu Panda Base has developed into the world's largest artificial breeding population of captive giant pandas. With research into artificial insemination, by 1990, technology came along that allowed the rearing of twin cubs. This increased the giant panda survival rate from 30 to 70 percent, and kept the species genetically diversified.
HOU RONG NPC DEPUTY "There are not many things that can be achieved in a lifetime, when I look back, for over 20 years I have been doing just one thing: saving the giant panda species. So I have contributed my efforts to the country, that is a sense of achievability."
Some people say there are contradictions between ecological protection and economic development. However, in the long run, experts say protecting the ecosystem will bring benefits, such as clean water and air, and that protecting wild animals is tantamount to protecting our motherland.
