As the BRICS Summit opens, here at CGTN we're profiling rising entrepreneurs within the BRICS community. Today we head to India, where one woman has taken it upon herself to build a safe online community for women. --Her name is Sairee Chahal. --Sairee started a women-only social networking site called SHEROES, a play on the word "Heroes." --The company currently has a value of around 50 million US dollars, but is expected to experience explosive growth in the next few years. CGTN's Shweta Bajaj has more from India.
In 2013, Sairee Chahal decided she wanted to use the internet to empower women. The end result SHEROES -- an online platform for women. A place where they can share their ideas, dreams and anxieties in an environment that is safe and non-judgemental. 5 years later, 5 million women now have platform where they can grow and be themselves.
SAIREE CHAHAL, FOUNDER & CEO SHEROES "I believe that internet is a very powerful tool for all kinds of impact. India is a living example of that, China is a classic example. With the population that we have, with the kind of issues we have, we definitely think we can do with a large safe space that is non-judgemental and constructive for women and it's absolutely the antithesis of the trend we are seeing on the internet. So it's a good time to do this."
The idea of SHEROES was simple. Give women a place online that they can trust. 5 million women are currently using the site and its mobile app, and interacting through communities focused on topics including careers, personal lives, health. But, Sairee is in no mood to stop. She says, in the next 3 to 4 years, she expects the numbers to go up to a 100 million women. With a population of more than 1 billion and a plan to launch in multiple languages and focus on rural users. That goal is only a matter of time. Currently, SHEROES is valued at 50 million US dollars. The company is turning profits and using the funds for the next rung of technological advancement.
SHWETA BAJAJ NEW DELHI, INDIA "If being a woman in India wasn't tough enough, being a female entrepreneur is even tougher. India has deeply entrenched gender biases. In fact, to even get funding is not an easy task. But, Sairee Chahal has defied all odds."
She says it's about putting your head down and doing your work.
SAIREE CHAHAL, FOUNDER & CEO SHEROES "I believe it's very important for companies to run like labs. You have to take quick experiments, run them, see whether they work, kill them with great amount of ruthlessness at an equal pace and move on to the next thing."
SHEROES first started as a place where women can build an online career. With the internet witnessing fast changes, today SHEROES is a place where women can connect. The next few years are going to be disruptive in the online space. Sairee's ambition is to make women self-reliant through financial and emotional independence. Something that is critical in India.
