Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro has been re-elected for a second six-year term.
Election officials report he got nearly 6-million votes, four-million more than his nearest rival. Less than half of registered voters turned out Sunday. The last presidential election in 2013 saw a turn-out of around 80-percent. Maduro dismissed America's insistence it won't recognize the result. His main rivals also called the vote illegitimate, saying there were widespread irregularities. Still, Maduro thanked cheering supporters for his victory.
NICOLAS MADURO PRESIDENT OF VENEZUELA "Thank you for overcoming so many aggressions, so many lies. Thank you for joining in so many battles and thank you for making me president of the Bolivarian Republic of Venezuela for the period 2019 through 2025. Thank you, beloved people of Venezuela."
HENRI FALCON VENEZUELAN PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE "It's an obligation for us to denounce the agreement signed as non-existent and because of that we don't recognise this electoral process as valid, right and proper. For us, there were no elections. We have to have new elections in Venezuela."
