China's Judicial Reform: Supreme People's Court establishes 1st International Commercial Expert Committee

The Supreme People's Court in Beijing has established its first International Commercial Expert Committee. The Committee is aimed at providing a professional International Commercial Dispute Resolution Mechanism and promoting fair trade. CGTN's Hou Na tells us more.
Legal experts and eminent scholars. The first group of 32 Chinese and Foreign Experts were appointed as members of the Expert Committee. Chief Justice Zhou Qiang, conferred the Appointment Letters to the representatives.

The establishment of the International Commercial Expert Committee is aimed at ensuring the smooth operation of the International Commercial Court, and supporting parties in resolving international commercial disputes through arbitration, mediation, litigation and other diverse commercial dispute settlement methods.
RIMSKY YUEN FORMER SECRETARY FOR JUSTICE OF HKSAR "The setting up of the international expert committee, this, as far as I know, is the first time that such a committee has been set up in the judicial history of China. I would say it is an extremely innovative measure."
Rimsky Yuen, Former Secretary for Justice of the Hong Kong Special Administrative Region, thinks that in order to promote the smooth facilitation of trade, especially along the Belt and Road trade route, China needs to have an effective dispute resolution system.

The first and second international commercial courts of the Supreme People's Court (SPC) were recently inaugurated in Shenzhen, in South China's Guangdong province and in Xi'an, in Northwest China's Shaanxi province.

The 32 Members are being entrusted by the International Commercial Court to mediate international commercial disputes and provide advisory opinions to the people's courts on specialized legal issues.
Meanwhile, they can also give advice on revision of the rules of the International Commercial Court, development plans, judicial interpretations and judicial policies of the Supreme People's Court.
