South Korea has urged Pyongyang to "stop actions that intensify military tensions on the Korean Peninsula" after the DPRK allegedly tested multiple missiles this morning. Each of the missiles reportedly flew 70 to 200 kilometers into the east sea. Seoul says the test went against the inter-Korean agreement signed between President Moon Jae-in and Kim Jong-un. The test is also being viewed as a warning shot aimed at Washington which is still insisting on full denuclearization before it lifts sanctions. CGTN's Jack Barton has more from Seoul.
It's not clear which of the many types of missiles the DPRK possesses was fired into the east sea on Saturday. It is suspected they were short range though definitely aimed to test Washington's resolve in keeping sanctions in place. South Korea had been keen for some easing of financial restrictions, but struck a tougher tone the day before the multiple launches.
KANG KYUNG-WHA SOUTH KOREAN FOREIGN MINISTER "The logic is very clear. The sanctions are there because of North Korea's nuclear and missiles program. And therefore, there has to be some visible, concrete and substantial action on that track for the global community to do anything about the sanctions."
Nuclear diplomacy on the Korean Peninsula has been in limbo ever since U.S. President Donald Trump walked away from what he described as a bad deal at his Hanoi summit with Kim Jong-un in February.
JACK BARTON SEOUL "Kim Jong-un and Russian President Vladimir Putin recently discussed reviving the long-stalled six-party talks that include Russia and China, though the U.S. is continuing to rule that out. The only thing that is really clear is that the DPRK needs money and in a hurry."
The United Nations released a report on Friday warning the DPRK had cut food rations to their lowest level ever for this time of year and may be forced to further slash them without international aid.
MARIO ZAPPACOSTA FAO SENIOR ECONOMIST "It is estimated that about 10.1 million people, around 40% of the population are considered to be food-insecure and in need of urgent food assistance."
The U.N. says the severe food shortages follow what its key food agencies describe as the worst harvest in a decade. Jack Barton, CGTN, Seoul.
