To Spain where Youssef En Nesyri is becoming a well-known name. The 21-year-old forward transferred to Leganes this season from Malaga and helped his new side stun the La Liga champions Barcelona 2-1 on September 26th. In the summer at the World Cup, En Nesyri scored for Morocco in their draw with Spain, and Al Goodman caught up with the burgeoning star while his country prepares for the African Cup of Nations qualifiers.
Moroccan football player Youssef En Nesyri never gets tired of looking at some special photos in his phone. They're from a game last summer. When, coming on as a late substitute for Morocco in the World Cup in Russia, he scored against Spain. Temporarily putting Morocco ahead against the former World Cup champion.
YOUSSEF EN NESYRI MOROCCO FORWARD "It was a normal feeling. There was a good corner kick to the center. I took advantage of it. I shot and it went in. I didn't even see it until it was in because I was looking the other way."
He's not looking the other way now. He's playing for Leganés in the first division of the powerful Spanish league. The stadium is in a working-class suburb of Madrid.
AL GOODMAN LEGANES, SPAIN "Leganes has been a football club for 90 years. But they've only been playing in the first division of the Spanish league for three seasons. The signing of Youssef En Nesyri is the second most expensive in the club's history. They paid more than five million dollars for him."
YOUSSEF EN NESYRI LEGANES FORWARD "I didn't pay attention to how much my money my signing cost. Those are things for the club. What I need to do is demonstrate, in the stadium, that I'm worth it."
And he's working on that now, after playing a few seasons at Malaga in Spain. He just came to Leganes and already helped them beat Messi's mighty Barcelona in a league game, right here, in this stadium. The Leganes sports director says the team wants to sign young and promising talent like En Nesyri, who's just 21.
TXEMA INDIAS LEGANES SPORTS DIRECTOR "He's a player we watched last year. We think he has huge potential. We saw him play with Malaga. And he's solid member of the Moroccan national team. With an age that's very good. So this summer the club decided to make an investment in him."
Leganes also has other African players. But they'll soon have to do without En Nesyri's service, when he returns to Morocco. It has an upcoming match against Comoros in an Africa's Cup qualifier.
YOUSSEF EN NESYRI MOROCCO FORWARD "Playing in Africa, when you're young, is difficult. There's not just football that is very physical, it's even harder when you're young."
But he's trying to use his advantages, like his height of 1.9 meters, or six foot two inches.
YOUSSEF EN NESYRI MOROCCAN FOOTBALL PLAYER "Each player is game by itself. Some players use their head, others their feet. But it's not necessary that you're tall or short."
But he is tall, and he's trying to stand even taller on the field, in Leganes, and especially for his native Morocco. Al Goodman, CGTN, Leganes, Spain.
