Mysterious black smoke was seen rising from a chimney atop the Russian consulate in San Francisco on Friday, as firefighters confirmed its occupants were burning unidentified objects on the eve of the mission's closure.
Later on Friday, consulate staff were seen loading items into a minivan.
On Thursday, the Trump administration ordered the closure of the consulate as well as two diplomatic annexes in response to "unwarranted" Russian action.
Spokeswoman for San Francisco Fire Department Mindy Talmadge said the department received a call about the smoke and sent a crew to investigate, but determined the smoke was coming from the chimney.
Firefighters who arrived at the scene were not allowed to enter the building.
