Now we head to the province of Free State in South Africa, where vintage motor racing is one of the most popular categories on the sport's calendar with the country boasting a rich history of motor racing dating back to the 1930's. CGTN's Julie Scheier has more.
Spectators young and old are reminded of the golden age of South African motor racing when these oldies take to the track.
PETER DU TOIT HISTORIC RACE CAR OWNER "South Africa has got a huge heritage of motorsport that go back to the 1930's but the 60's was the golden age of motor racing in South Africa and the Sports Car Club started it through the historic racing car register South Africa which has now evolved in 'Historic Racing of South Africa' just to protect the heritage of what we had."
Historic Racing South Africa has over 500 registered cars. Some are original others re-creations.
PETER DU TOIT HISTORIC RACE CAR OWNER "The cars they were worthless, nobody gave any attention to them but then one thing led to the other these cars appreciated in value, many of them were lost to the country - we are still fortunate to have many here - there has been a lot of re-creations of the icons of the 60's."
Classic car racing is spread over various categories from pre-1950 to the V-8 muscle cars of the sixties and seventies, up to pre-1990 Porsches.
PETER LINDENBERG CLASSIC CAR OWNER "You got to be dedicated to run these things because they are not easy to run, parts are difficult to get it is a tough series to compete in but it is enjoyable and you hanker back to the days when you were younger there is nothing electronic in here no driver aids no nothing you drive the car and I guess that is why I enjoy it because that is what my era was."
ISMAEL BALOYI CLASSIC CAR OWNER "This little baby behind me you know is called an Alpha Dart it is a South African produced car between the years of 57 and 1967 one of the most successful cars anywhere in racing. The reason why I love driving this car is that it is not like a modern car. When you apply brakes you have to hit the brakes hard when you steering you know you have to be physically strong."
Historic car racing is the fourth biggest motorsport category in the world in terms of value, public interest and events.
PETER DU TOIT HISTORIC RACE CAR OWNER "I believe there is great future for historics in the sense that the cars were different, they got a different identity, they are a challenge to race and the public love them."
In South Africa, classic motor racing has a big fan base and track days are a nostalgic throwback that captures and relives the sights and sounds of years gone by. JULIE SCHEIER, CGTN, PHAKISA RACEWAY, SOUTH AFRICA.
