In an attempt to counter the Boko Haram insurgency, authorities will now offer allowances to parents who send their children to school, according to a report by DW. It comes amid reports some families are 'donating' their daughters to the insurgency.
The new program – Conditional Cash Transfer to Parents- will increase school enrollment and fight extremist ideology in the fight against the eight-year insurgency.
“Over 800 schools in northeastern Nigeria have been damaged, burnt, looted or remain occupied by internally displaced persons (IDPs) who sought refuge inside the classrooms,” says DW.
Conflict, displacement, family separation and death has inflicted the region due to the Boko Haram insurgency. The terrorist group also forbids formal education which they call Western-style education.
Parents of girls will receive a higher allowance than boys in a deliberate attempt to improve female education.
