The 13th National People's Congress and the 13th Chinese People's Political Consultative Conference will begin in several days. The political season is drawing great attention and China has also mapped out several economic plans and blueprints, such as the Greater Bay Area in the south. The region encompassing Guangdong Province, Hong Kong, and Macao is fast becoming a hot area for business, commerce, trade and much more. And one young Hong Kong CEO is hard at work guiding his second company to success in the Chinese mainland. CGTN's Mark Fontes reports.
MARK FONTES SHENZHEN "This is Shenzhen Bay Port, one of several busy border checkpoints in the Greater Bay Area of Guangdong, Hong Kong and Macao. It's here that thousands of Hong Kong residents everyday cross over into the Mainland for work and other opportunities. Sounds like a busy daily grind. But one young man we met explains why it's all worth it."
"I grew up in Hong Kong. In the weekdays I just, you know, wake up maybe 8 o'clock, and then after breakfast, I just go to the Shenzhen Bay."
Dr. Abraham Lam's strides throughout the Greater Bay Area are fast becoming giant steps up the professional ladder.
"I enjoy to take up challenges and meet with new guys, new people, and then we can talk about business."
For the last two years, the 32-year old founder and CEO of Mega Automation in Hong Kong has focused on growing its Shenzhen sister company, Fusquare.
DR. ABRAHAM LAM CO-FOUNDER & CEO, FUSQUARE "People talk about smart cities nowadays. So, we want to have our own hardware to enable the building access to those equipment."
Among Fusquare's plans in the pipeline - one that aims to make your smart phone a master remote control for your office.
PATRICK SIU CO-FOUNDER & COO, FUSQUARE "Our solutions, for example, would consist of indoor lightings, as well as, you know we call it thermal comfort. You spend one third of your time in an office every day. So it's really important for an employee to feel comfortable and to maintain a healthy lifestyle in the office."
Lam and colleagues spend their office time at the IDG incubator, a smart office complex that houses young start-ups at affordable lease rates while helping them connect with prospective clients.
PATRICK SIU CO-FOUNDER & COO, FUSQUARE "The talent pool is much bigger than what we can find in Hong Kong, and also, it's more cost-efficient as well because of the living standard here."
And experts say with the Greater Bay Area earning its keep as the next silicon valley, Lam's team is doing things the right way.
PROFESSOR ZHANG GUANGNAN INST. OF GUANGDONG, HONG KONG & MACAO DEV’T STUDIES SUN YAT-SEN UNIVERSITY "You don't know whether after three years or five years they will become the next Huawei or the next Tencent. The speed is very amazing in China, in the Bay Area."
WANG FUMIN TRANSPORTATION DEPT. OF GUANGDONG PROVINCE "This is China's gateway to Southeast Asia and beyond. This area has a long lasting relationship and good trade ties with many countries, and the Greater Bay Area will make major contributions to the Belt and Road Initiative."
Lam says regardless of the long hours and constant travel, he is following his dreams here in the Greater Bay Area. Mark Fontes, CGTN, Shenzhen.
