In the following scenario, we hear from officers from two different divisions in China about how they managed to foil a shipment of cocaine from Peru. This is one of the investigations that took place in 2016, but was only recently revealed to the public. Xing Ruinan reports.
Twenty kilograms of drugs found in a well of the engine's cabin.
INVESTIGATOR ANTI-DRUG DIVISION, TANGSHAN POLICE BUREAU "We found a black carry-on in the engine's cabin. When we opened it, we found twenty blocks of powder. After conducting tests, we found it to be cocaine."
Police divisions in Tangshan and Shanghai were able to work together to resolve this particular case. They knew the drugs were loaded onto a ship in Peru which was bound for China. The traffickers, from Hong Kong and Russia, were working for drug lords in South Asia and Latin America. Their original plan was to offload the drugs in Tangshan, but they missed their opportunity there, and were forced to do it in Shanghai.
INVESTIGATOR ANTI-DRUG DIVISION, SHANGHAI POLICE BUREAU "After a failed attempt at the first stop, Tangshan, they thought the ship was just here in Shanghai to load more commodities."
The traffickers had just two days to retrieve the drugs from the ship in Shanghai before it set sail for Hong Kong, but their best efforts were being hampered by bad weather. The police, needing to catch them in the act, were hoping they would eventually make their move.
INVESTIGATOR ANTI-DRUG DIVISION, TANGSHAN POLICE BUREAU "The suspects tried to approach the cargo ship by boat four times. Due to the wind and strong waves, they didn't even get near the ship for the bag of drugs. If the ship departed on time, the situation would no longer be in our control."
However, the traffickers were very desperate, and tried every means at their disposal to get the drugs off the ship including buying diving equipment in a local shop.
INVESTIGATOR ANTI-DRUG DIVISION, TANGSHAN POLICE BUREAU "Two divers came up from the water. The Russian drug dealer asked them to go back down, but the waves were so high, the divers knew it was very risky. But they did it nevertheless because they knew how much the drugs were worth. They nearly fought about it. After they got back to shore, we saw six of them in a car, so we went up to capture them."
The police found nearly 100 kilograms of cocaine on the ship. After their thorough investigations, they found that the crew members were innocent, and knew nothing about the case. Meanwhile, the suspects acknowledged the part they played in the smuggling attempt. XRN, CGTN.
