Umthombo Street Children in Durban, the largest city in South Africa, is a non-profit organization committed to getting kids off the streets and providing alternatives for them.
The organization has a unique understanding of the dynamics of homeless youth and their sporting programs empower children to make a fresh start.
The team offers psychological help, education and drug rehabilitation for children in need. Meanwhile, its members also attempt, when possible, to reunite the children with their families.
One of the key “therapeutic methods" is sports to help the kids build relationships and understand themselves. Andile Zwane, who used to be a street kid, now teaches how to surf and uses his story to inspire others.
The organization has seen many children become polished surfers and find a purpose in life.
Surfing gets people into the water to catch waves. “Surfing also keeps me away from doing criminal acts and wrong things,” Tsepo Khumalo, a surfer from the team said.
