China is building the world’s fastest wind tunnel in suburban Beijing, aiming to be capable of simulating hypersonic flight at speeds of 12 km per second. At such speed, aircraft would be able to reach the US west coast from China within 14 minutes.
Scientists said that the goal is to complete the facility and have it operational by 2020.
As the world’s first wind tunnel was built by the British, the UK paid close attention to China’s breakthrough in this field, with many domestic media agencies reporting about the news first hand, as well as other global news organizations.
Wind tunnel technology has remained stagnant for over 60 years, but this experiment by Chinese scientists may spark a revolution in aerodynamics, and more Chinese high-tech aircraft could be in the skies as a result.
