China's four decades of growth has put it closer to the center stage of the world. How to effectively tell Chinese stories to the world is an increasing challenge for the country and its people. Opinions are divided among different groups trying to tell a true picture of China today. In today's episode "Beyond The Wall", CGTN correspondent Han Bin meets two Chinese singing groups in their 20s, CD REV in Chengdu, and NoTwoBros from the USA. Their goal is to use music for cross-cultural communication.
"Regardless of all the prejudice in the past, today I wanna restore the impression you have on my country, China, which have been exactly fabricated by media for such a long time."
We are CD REV. This song reveals a big picture of China. Let's pump it up!
TAN JUNWEN CD REV "I just want to tell the West the young generation of Chinese have their unique ideas."
WANG ZIXIN CD REV "We can also express our ideas through this popular and fashionable art form."
TAN JUNWEN CD REV "It's not like how they perceive us. They think we say what the government wants us to say."
LI YIJIE CD REV "We have a very objective perspective towards our country."
LUO JINHUI CD REV "We also want people to make some changes to our society."
WANG ZIXIN CD REV "Telling an excellent Chinese story is better than just adding some traditional Chinese musical instruments into the music. I think a good story can better deliver the power of music."
LIU TIANYI NOTWOBROS "We are NoTwoBros."
JIN YUCHEN NOTWOBROS "We are trying to create this new music genre that will hopefully appeal to both Chinese audience and the western audience."
LIU TIANYI NOTWOBROS "Well the Chinese culture is giving us the tradition. The western culture is really telling me like how to be confident, how to represent yourself."
JIN YUCHEN NOTWOBROS "We want to make sure that we have control over identifying who we are."
LIU TIANYI NOTWOBROS "And to represent ourselves to express something that overseas people couldn't see."
JIN YUCHEN NOTWOBROS "basically bring the best from China."
LIU TIANYI NOTWOBROS "Something new and something people could never make."
JIN YUCHEN NOTWOBROS "We want to make sure that we are constantly telling good stories."
TAN JUNWEN CD REV "The reason hip-hop fascinates me is it's an expressive thing. This kind of process can give meaning to my life."
LI YIJIE CD REV "Let people see hip-hop doesn't have only the dirty things of American culture but also has our own value added into it."
WANG ZIXIN CD REV "So I hope the rap music that young Chinese hear is positive."
LUO JINHUI CD REV "Foreigners can use our Peking Opera to recompose and then add their own culture. Then If their music can convince Chinese people, they are incredible. I think we can also do likewise."
JIN YUCHEN NOTWOBROS "I think pop is a very good foundation for bringing that information across."
LIU TIANYI NOTWOBROS "If you want to represent yourself, you have to take advantage from the western culture."
JIN YUCHEN NOTWOBROS "It's also our goal to break stereotypes through music, the kind of music that we are trying to create."
LIU TIANYI NOTWOBROS "You have to accumulate as credits. It's not only one day thing or one year thing."
"This is China, we love the country, we the Chi-phenomena. The red dragon ain't no evil, but a peaceful place the beautiful land with rich culture remain."
TAN JUNWEN CD REV "Now in this era, our country has a relatively high status in the world. Let the world pay attention to us, and listen to what we say."
LIU TIANYI NOTWOBROS "Yeah, our generation benefit from, you know, the open door policy. We benefit from it and we are also carry on it."
WANG ZIXIN CD REV "Western media shouldn't give us a political label.
LUO JINHUI CD REV "A lot of western media criticize us, but, in fact, we get a good response at home."
LI YIJIE CD REV "So I think I should bring China's good things to the world."
TAN JUNWEN CD REV "We have different cultures, we have different ethnicities. We need to let everyone communicate with each other, get along peacefully and create a meaningful conversation. Then the world will get better and better."
JIN YUCHEN NOTWOBROS "The kind of music that will resonate in both the Chinese community and the overseas community. That's our way of telling Chinese story to the global audience."
