A member of Iran's clerical elite has said Europeans could ALSO not be trusted, after President Hassan Rouhani said Tehran would remain in a 2015 nuclear deal with world powers even after the US pulled out. In a televised address to worshippers at Tehran University, Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami went on to issue a warning toward Iran's arch-enemy Israel.
AHMAD KHATAMI SENIOR IRANIAN CLERIC "We will expand our missile capabilities despite Western pressure to let Israel know that if it acts foolishly, Tel Aviv and Haifa will be brought down in ruins and totally destroyed."
Earlier on Thursday, Israel accused Iran of firing rockets from Syria into the Israeli-occupied Golan Heights, the first time that Iran has attacked Israel with rockets. Israel struck back with its heaviest air strikes in Syria since the start of the Syrian civil war in 2011, saying that it attacked nearly all of Iran's military infrastructure. On Friday, a top US general said Iran's attempts to strike Israeli targets were "unacceptable" and "highly dangerous".
GENERAL JOSEPH VOTEL COMMANDER OF US CENTRAL COMMAND "We condemn the Iranian missile attacks that took place last night, fired into the Golan (Heights) area, and attempting to strike the population in Israel. This is unacceptable and it's highly dangerous, and it's raising the stakes and the opportunity for miscalculation and conflict in this region."
