Consumers in China and other parts of the world may be familiar with durian, dragon fruit, rambutan and other fruits that flourish in Southeast Asia, but what about the gac fruit? The gac fruit is packed full of carotenoids, including beta-carotene, and Vitamin C. One company in Vietnam makes a wide array of products from the fruit and is looking to November's China International Import Expo in Shanghai to help it crack China's enormous market. Rian Maelzer reports from northern Vietnam.
The gac fruit's deep red flesh is used to colour sticky rice for festive occasions as well as in traditional medicine here in Vietnam.
But a company called Moocos believes the fruit, which is high in beta-carotene and the phyto-nutrient lycopene, is a wonder food with global appeal. They produce oil, powder, blended juice and puree from the fruit.
MYRON CHEN MOOCOS VIETNAM GAC FRUIT "We spent a lot of time to do the R & D work. We find the best way to extract the oil from the Gac fruit. And we also find the best way to produce the powder to preserve the lycopene inside, to try to keep all the nutrition inside the Gac fruits.'
Moocos exports to 10 countries and territories.
MYRON CHEN MOOCOS VIETNAM GAC FRUIT "We didn't push too much to China market because China market is too big and we needed to prepare well. So now China market is small part in our business but it is our highest target for our company to catch China market."
The company will be showcasing their gac fruit products in Shanghai at the China International Import Expo in November.
MYRON CHEN MOOCOS VIETNAM GAC FRUIT "We hope we can find some potential partners in China market who are really interested and really professional."
Vietnam will be looking to promote its agricultural products, processed foodstuffs, consumer goods and services at the expo.
RIAN MAELZER HANOI "Vietnam's trade with China grew an astonishing 29 percent last year with Vietnam's exports to China rising 37 percent."
But Vietnam has a large trade deficit with China and analysts believe there's huge potential to export more agro-based products.
LE DANG DOANH FORMER GOVERNMENT ECONOMIC ADVISOR "To get a small segment from the gigantic Chinese market it turns to be more challenging. Vietnam must have a very large-scale agricultural production, apply modern technology, reach constant, durable quality."
Moocos have tapped European expertise to make sure their production methods meet the highest global standards. It is their hope that this fruit will one day be a well-known nutritional food product the world over. Rian Maelzer, CGTN, Hai Phong, Vietnam.
