China-US Ties: Beijing condemns Washington's establishment of Taiwan office

The Trump administration has put itself into another political swirl of condemnation. China has sent a stern message to Washington over its official exchanges with Taiwan. And as CGTN's Zhao Yunfei reports, the US move runs contrary to the international recognition of the One China principle.

Strong condemnation over US officials attending a ceremony for Washington's new office in Taiwan.

MA XIAOGUANG SPOKESPERSON, TAIWAN AFFAIRS OFFICE OF THE STATE COUNCIL "We firmly oppose any form of official contact between the United States and Taiwan. The United States should earnestly abide by the one China principle and three China-US joint communiques, so as not to undermine Sino-US relations and peace and stability across the Taiwan Strait."

A so-called dedication ceremony for the new Taipei office of the American Institute in Taiwan was held on Tuesday. Washington says the unveiling of the site is a symbol of strength of the partnership with Taiwan. China called on the U.S. to correct its mistakes.

GENG SHUANG SPOKESPERSON, CHINESE FOREIGN MINISTRY "I must point out that the US, by sending officials to Taiwan under whatever pretext, severely violates the one-China principle and three China-US joint communiques, interferes in China's internal affairs and exerts a negative impact on China-US relations."

ZHAO YUNFEI BEIJING "China is gaining more friends throughout the international community. In May, both the Dominican Republic and Burkina Faso, cut ties with Taiwan, and established and resumed ambassadorial level relations with Beijing."

Tuesday's move is not the first time the Trump administration crossed the red line and challenged the one China principle.
