Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in Abu Dhabi, capital of the United Arab Emirates, for a state visit. This is the first trip by a Chinese head of state to the Arab country in 29 years. The UAE prime minister and crown prince welcomed Xi Jinping and his wife Peng Liyuan in a ceremony at the airport. The Chinese president said his trip is to further advance bilateral relations. The UAE prime minister and crown prince called Xi Jinping a long term good friend of the Emirati people.
China and the UAE set up diplomatic ties in 1984. Last year, bilateral trade hit 41 billion US dollars. And the UAE is also a founding member of the Asian Infrastructure Investment Bank and strongly supports the Belt and Road Initiative. After the UAE, Xi Jinping will also pay state visits to Senegal, Rwanda and South Africa. He will also have a stopover in Mauritius.
