A temporary new chief for state bank Caisse des Depots (CDC) will be named this week, a presidential official said on Tuesday, replacing Pierre Rene Lemas who is due to retire.
Confirming a report in Le Monde newspaper, the official at President Emmanuel Macron's office declined comment on who the person might be.
Lemas said earlier this year that he wanted to carry on in the role until 2019, even though he reaches the age limit this month on his 66th birthday. It was previously unclear whether he would be allowed to do that.
Under Macron's predecessor, Francois Hollande, Lemas was chief of staff to the president while Macron was deputy chief of staff.
The CDC runs financing projects and savings accounts, and also holds stakes in many top French companies.
