Chinese President Xi Jinping met with U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo in Beijing on Thursday. Xi said China and the U.S. should solve their differences and promote bilateral ties. Earlier, Chinese State Councilor and Foreign Minister Wang Yi also held talks with Pompeo. CGTN's Zheng Yibing has details.
The visit to China by America's top diplomat comes right after the historic Trump-Kim summit earlier this week. Chinese President Xi Jinping welcomed U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo at the Great Hall of the People. Xi said China and the U.S. should enhance understandings, manage their differences, and expand cooperation. Pompeo extended greetings from the U.S. President. He said Donald Trump values his relationship with Xi, and the U.S. is willing to broaden communication and handle disputes. Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi met Pompeo separately. He praised the achievements of the summit in Singapore.
WANG YI CHINESE STATE COUNCILOR AND FOREIGN MINISTER "The meeting has put the denuclearization of the Korean peninsula on the right track to talks and peaceful settlement. It has historic significance."
Pompeo thanked China for its efforts.
MIKE POMPEO U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE "We appreciate all that China did to help put us in the place where that summit could happen and we thank you for that. There is still more work to be done by China and the United States to get to the ultimate outcome."
Both top diplomats then briefed reporters on matters of areas of mutual concern, such as the on-going trade dispute. Wang Yi said that with almost four decades of bilateral ties, both countries have more in common than differences.
WANG YI CHINESE STATE COUNCILOR AND FOREIGN MINISTER "We hope the both countries utilize constructive ways to settle our differences, and resolve relevant issues through a win-win solution, instead of the lose-lose approach."
And Pompeo said both sides have a lot to work together on.
MIKE POMPEO U.S. SECRETARY OF STATE "When we cooperate, United States and China can make great progress. There is much work ahead for us. I am committed talking with you and with China, to achieve those objectives."
Wang also said next year will be the 40th anniversary of establishing bilateral ties, and more talks and communications are expected.
ZHENG YIBING BEIJING "This visit is an important high-level interaction between the two sides. Beijing hopes it will help move the China-U.S. relations forward. ZHENG YIBING, CGTN, BEIJING."
