Tech experts are gathering in Beijing for the two-day World Internet of Things Security Summit 2018. So how are China's efforts in safeguarding internet security? Wei Lynn Tang finds out.
With over 30 billion devices worldwide expected to be connected to the internet by 2020, cyber security naturally is now a priority for almost every country.
Experts at the World Internet of Things Summit agree that the IoT network -- which includes physical objects like buildings and vehicles, will play a larger impact on businesses more than ever.
They also say companies now are broadly more receptive towards China's new cyber security law, which was implemented a year ago.
SUSAN NING PARTNER, KING & WOOD MALLESONS "In a way it is strict but this is something to start with because cyber security is now viewed as much as a sovereignty level by all jurisdictions. So the protection of information security, operation security is really a need, a must."
According to the China National Vulnerability Database, the almost 16-thousand cases of hard and software security vulnerability in 2017 was a record high. Mobile devices and application software accounted for the highest proportion.
That said, this security and data sciences expert is not concerned, citing the relatively lower incidents China has seen compared to other countries.
DR. LUCAS HUI SNR. DIRECTOR, HONG KONG APPLIED SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY RESEARCH INSTITUTE "China is doing very well in this and in recent years can see a lot of new developments in China and better than a lot of countries over the world, but still because China is the biggest adoption of new technology so demand of cyber security professionals, laws, standards and technology will be much bigger."
WEI LYNN TANG BEIJING "Simply put, the Internet of Things refers to the connection of devices to the internet. This includes your smartphones, to home appliances and cars. And according to market intelligence firm IDC, China's IoT spending in 2018 is forecasted to be the world's highest at 209 billion US dollars, accounting for over a quarter of global spending."
And for technology conglomerate Cisco, it says the Chinese market is its absolute priority going forward, driven by the country's digital transformation.
ALEKSANDAR ANDRIC IOT SOLUTIONS ARCHITECT, CISCO SYSTEMS "Infrastructure is very developed here, and there is huge potential in other rural areas we can see a lot of new different investments in mining, manufacturing and all the other industrial verticals."
As China continues to drive towards a smarter future, a sense of urgency is needed to ensure internet security keeps pace. As the summit chairman, who is also from Microsoft, says: security is a journey, and not an endpoint. WLT, CGTN, Beijing.
