At least 78 people have died in the eastern Indian state of Bihar, where floodwaters flowing downstream from Nepal have devastated villages, causing landslides and breaking bridges.
A video showed people plunging into raging floodwater as a bridge collapsed under them.
People were leaving their homes to dry land. Some were carrying just a suitcase full of belongings with them.
Nearly 275,000 people from 14 of 28 state districts have been rescued so far, said a state government official.
Floods and landslides have claimed more than 250 lives in India, southern Nepal and Bangladesh, while thousands of people have been displaced since the start of the monsoon season in June.
Deadly landslides and flooding are common across South Asia during the summer monsoon season that stretches from June to September.
Most people die because of drowning, or after being caught in collapsed houses or under toppled trees.
