Malaysian maritime officials said that they have dispatched vessels and helicopters to join the search operations for 10 missing US sailors, after the USS John S. McCain collided with an oil tanker east of Singapore this morning.
The officials told reporters the search is focusing on an area of 100 square nautical miles. The US Navy said earlier that four of the five injured sailors were transferred to Singapore for medical treatment.
The guided missile destroyer was on its way to Singapore on a routine port visit at the time of the collision. The warship is said to be severely damaged. A crew member of the oil tanker Alnic MC said there was no spillage from the vessel, which was carrying 12,000 tons of fuel oil.
Earlier in June, seven sailors died when the USS Fitzgerald and a container ship collided in waters off Japan.
