Now we meet Wei Huixiao, who made history in 2016 when she became the FIRST female deputy captain in the Chinese navy. Now she's about to make history again, as she prepares to assume the title of captain. Here's her story.
"All attention please, all attention please." "Rescue deployment, right full rudder." "Copy, rescue deployment."
WEI HUIXIAO, CAPTAIN IN TRAINING ZHENGZHOU DESTROYER "This is a very routine deployment training. This morning I received an urgent assignment, so we need to move ahead all the preparations."
This is Wei Huixiao, captain in training at the navy's Zhengzhou destroyer. She's about to take her final assessment. If she passes, she will become the FIRST female captain in the navy's history.
"Since my first day in the navy, I have made every minute count. I feel like I belong here."
Wei has an impressive resume. She has a PhD in Geosciences, has worked for a major tech company, taught as a teacher in Tibet and have even won an award in a beauty pageant. And 8 years ago, when she turned 34, she decided to become a sailor.
"I'd like to go to the battlefield, even if I died there. No problem. I'd like to go."
After submitting a self-recommendation to the navy, she passed all the assessments and was admitted to a logistics support ship for China's first aircraft carrier -- the Liaoning. Then she was promoted to deputy captain in training of the Changchun destroyer.
Soon after, the Zhengzhou Destroyer became her new home.
