“Cooperation should be the core tone in dealing with China’s diplomatic issues,” the president of the China Institute of International Studies Su Ge stated, when talking about China’s diplomatic development in the future.
Reviewing China’s diplomatic relations in the past five decades, both successful achievements and challenges were marked. With global governance struggling to deal with increasingly thorny issues, the upcoming 19th CPC National Congress is expecting to reaffirm China's role in global governance in the future and the relationship between China and other countries.
As Su Ge analyzed that under the “Belt and Road” strategy, China may have two diplomatic priorities: Diplomacy toward great powers and diplomacy toward neighboring countries. “The China-US bilateral relations will still be the core of Chinese diplomacy,” he explained, “The US and China are the most important countries in the world, if these two countries do not cooperate, that would hurt general direction of even peace and development of the world.”
He suggested, “In the upcoming days, that in the days to come, if we have attitude to cooperation, if we have ways to manage our differences to avoid the confrontation, if we try to expect each others’ major interests, that will be possible for both of the countries (to) have win-win solution.”
While moving forward, China, now identifying itself as a comprehensive great power, will try to adopt a more balanced approach to great power diplomacy and emphasize neighborhood diplomacy, particularly in China-India relations.
“I think it’s no doubt that one of the biggest challenges facing by China-India relations is trust deficit between these two countries,” Professor Wang Dong from Peking University claimed. He also suggested that both countries still need to invest great efforts in resources to deepen our social economic development and people-to-people exchange, because this will lead to a very solid foundation for the bilateral relations.
In the view of Professor M.D. Nalapat at Manipal University, it’s very important that China and India should learn to know each other better. “The amount of knowledge we have about China and India is very low. Both of the Chinese and Indians do extensive research on United States and Europe… So what’s important is to learn more knowledge about each other, because they are two largest developing countries in the world. We should do our own lessons rather than borrow lessons from outside,” Nalapat said.
