For years Hainan province has been developing its tourism industry to attract visitors from around the world. But now the province is looking to develop in a different direction. Authorities have rolled out new measures to attract overseas talents, in order to meet the goals of becoming a pilot free trade zone -- and eventually, a free trade port. CGTN's ZHENG CHUNYING has more on Hainan's ambitions.
More and more talents from home and abroad are expected to move to this tropical island paradise.
A talent introduction strategy has been launched in Hainan Province, aiming to attract an estimated 200,000 people from various fields and industries.
The goal? To have them arrive by 2020 and grow their numbers to a staggering one million by 2025.
WANG RUILIAN MEMBER OF CPC HAINAN PROVINCIAL COMMITTEE "We welcome all kinds of talented people from a wide range of key industries, including enterprise talents, state-owned company talents, and government talents."
And to lure those much-needed talents, the government will offer preferential policies.
According to the plan, for those with outstanding skills, the province will help them with housing, education plans for their children, and jobs for their spouses.
And restrictions on access to a Hainan hukou, or household registration document, will be eased for talents coming from China.
For example, those who have at least a junior college degree and an intermediate-level job title will be allowed to gain a hukou.
HUO JURAN, DIRECTOR HOUSING AND CONSTRUCTION DEP'T OF HAINAN PROVINCE "For the talents coming from outside, they will be able to enjoy same home purchase policies as locals in Hainan, without any restrictions."
The government will also create a better environment for business people and enterprise innovation, and will further improve the infrastructure of the island.
Last month, while celebrating the 30th anniversary of Hainan being designated as a new province, the central government unveiled plans to build Hainan into a pilot international free trade zone and gradually explore building a free trade port.
Hopefully, the island can look forward to a brighter future, alongside its already beautiful beaches. ZHENG CHUNYING, CGTN.
