Apple's iPhone turned 10 on Thursday, evoking memories of a rocky start for the device that ended up doing the most to start the smartphone revolution and stirring interest in where it will go from here.
Apple has sold more than 1 billion iPhones since June 29th, 2007. The iPhone hit its stride in 2008 when Apple introduced the App Store. Fans and investors are now awaiting the 10th anniversary iPhone 8, expected this fall, asking whether it will deliver enough new features to motivate a new generation to turn to Apple.
There are loads of smartphones out there that do that kind of stuff and some did it before. However iPhone has its way to get so much credit
“Absolutely, any player that was in the market before the iPhone arrived completely underestimated consumer demand, these were business devices, corporate devices Apple's great victory was taking the edges off all of these scary, sciency, nerdy technologies and polishing it all up in a way that most people could interact with. And make it desirable,” said Juan Carlos Bagnell, a reviewer.
The iPhone also helped make Apple the world's most valuable company and kickstarted a billion dollar app industry. Which Apple never even wanted at first.
"If Steve Jobs, alone, had his way, there might not even be an iPhone. He had to be pushed and pressured and get demonstrations of what this technology could do every step of the way,” said Brain Merchant, the author of “The One Device”.
