Here are some key dates ahead on the path to separation.

In twenty days, EU leaders will hold a summit in Brussels to hopefully sign off on a post-Brexit transition deal.

March twenty-ninth will mark exactly one year left till the Brexit deadline.

At the end of June, European leaders will meet again in Brussels.

The end of October is the deadline set by the EU's chief negotiator to wrap up talks with Britain.

On March twenty-ninth, 2019, the United Kingdom will formally leave the EU after four decades. And the transition period is expected to begin.

It will end on the last day of 2020, under the EU's current proposals.
