As one of the five founding members of the SCO, China has been committed to its development. President Xi Jinping has attended every summit since taking office in 2013. At the 2015 summit, he and other SCO leaders drew up a blueprint for the bloc's development in the coming decade. Wang Qiwei gives us an overview of the event.
The 15th SCO summit in the Russian city of Ufa has special significance. It came at a time when the region was suffering from waves of extremism and an economic downturn. And what was China's solution? President Xi Jinping proposed building a community of shared future in the region. He said the SCO should continue to take the "Shanghai Spirit" as a guide. With the rise of terrorism in the Middle East, President Xi asked member countries to take efforts to keep regional security. And that includes boosting policy communication and studying coping measures.
To make the organization more effective, a blueprint was drawn up at the summit. It set goals for the SCO members to strengthen cooperation in areas including politics, security and trade. Another highlight during the summit was China's relations with Russia. Both countries are the founding members of the SCO. President Xi said the cooperation between the two countries is important for the organization's development. He also said both nations should use the SCO as an important platform to enhance ties.
Grand welcoming ceremonies, cooperative deals and a strengthening friendship, China and Russia have kept close relations over the years. Both countries have also seen an increase in trade, with a total volume of 84 billion US dollars last year. As China and Russia hold a year of local exchange in 2018, bilateral ties are expected to enter a new era. WQW, CGTN.
