To South Africa now. Tsholo "Splash" Motong produces color-splashed art. Motong's work is inspired by his grandmother who used to sell vegetables and did some basic sewing. Also a fashion designer, he fuses design with his art, as he portrays African women. CGTN's Yolisa Njamela has more.
YOLISA NJAMELA JOHANNESBURG, SOUTH AFRICA "Splash's art is a true reflection of his upbringing and he loves to incorporate everyday life in Soweto and Johannesburg in most of his artworks."
Splash discovered his creativity and artistic potential at a young age. As a colourful artist, he relishes using bright colours.
TSHOLO "SPLASH" MOTONG ARTIST "My work is only inspired by local scenes from hydro city scales like these. Whether its trains, township shacks or four-roomed houses. I take it to the city. I've got bright cityscapes and I've got these dark ones during the night, so mostly I reflect on Joburg because I was born and raised in Soweto which has a rich history of migrant labour. I use a lot of colour because I believe colour is like a spice of life."
He tells us that he uses recycled fabric and newspaper collage mixed with acrylic paint to give his work a multi-faceted approach to reflect the diversity of Africa and its people.
TSHOLO "SPLASH" MOTONG ARTIST "I also preserve the environment because fabric doesn't biodegrade similar to plastics. It takes a long time. So to me giving it a second life, giving them new life, it makes an old product into something new, something different."
Splash has a degree in fashion design and has worked for various top designers in Johannesburg.
His main inspiration is his grandmother, hence the dominance of women in his artwork.
TSHOLO "SPLASH" MOTONG ARTIST "She was my pillar, she raised me up from the ground up, she used to do crafts like knitting and crochet, so that's how I started learning how to work with fabrics and colours and enjoying textures. She didn't scold at me when I told her I want to venture in this career."
Whenever he uses fabrics, he ensures that they have African roots.
TSHOLO "SPLASH" MOTONG ARTIST "The Shweshwe is usually found among the Sotho. If you go to the Kalanga they have their own colour, so I try to fuse that in a dress. So I've got four different prints which are from Ghana. The Shweshwe - I've got the Swazi print as well. So you would find something that you don't find on dresses but in art, there's no boundaries."
Splash's work is much much-admired. He's now venturing into selling his art in art fairs and other such events. And his work is proving to be quite popular.
