At least five people were killed and several injured when a suicide car bomber blew himself up at a checkpoint near the parliament and interior ministry in Somalia's capital Mogadishu on Sunday.

Plumes of smoke could be seen billowing over the area.

Two soldiers and the car driver were among the dead, said senior police captain Mohamed Hussein. Some of the 10 or so people wounded are rickshaw drivers, he added.
