An electoral conference to elect deputies from the Macao Special Administrative Region to the 13th National People's Congress (NPC) convened its second plenary session on Sunday, where attendees elected 12 deputies representing the city at the NPC. Eight of them were re-elected, and four were newcomers.
The voting was presided over by the NPC election presidium's standing president, and also Macao's Chief Executive, Chui Sai On. A total of 466 members of the electoral conference attended the election, in which 15 candidates contended for 12 seats.
Wang Chen, vice chairman of the NPC Standing Committee said, "The election was held in a fair, open, and just manner. The arrangements are in strict compliance with established regulations to fully reflect the spirit of democracy."
The newly-elected deputies said they would fulfill their duties with the aim of achieving the long-term prosperity and stability of Macao. They said they would hold the nation's Constitution, the Macao Basic Law and the "One Country, Two Systems" principle, in allegiance with the nation and the Macao SAR.
Lu Bo, a current NPC deputy for Macao SAR, was re-elected for the next term. He said, "I'm glad to be re-elected. I will continue working hard. I will convey the message of the local people to Beijing, and try to win more support from the central government for Macao's economic development."
"This is an encouragement. I will continue to serve our country and the people of Macao. I will make an effort to push forward the closer integration between Macao and the mainland," said Lai Sai Kei, a newly-elected NPC deputy for Macao.
"I feel heavy responsibilities. We will work as a bridge between the central government and the Macao SAR. We should make concrete steps to bring our city more opportunities along with our country's fast development," said Si Ka Lon, another newly-elected NPC deputy for Macao.
This is the fifth election for NPC deputies since Macao returned to the mainland in 1999. The presidium will soon submit the list of elected delegates to the NPC Standing Committee for a screening of their eligibility as deputies.
The 12 will assume their positions as NPC deputies early next year. The locals hope they can then bring their aspirations and concerns to the country's top decision-making body, especially on issues related to their livelihoods and economic development.
