Smart wristbands fitted with GPS to track and protect left-behind rural children have been handed out to those in need in Bijie city and Qianxinan Buyi and Miao Autonomous Prefecture in southwest China's Guizhou province.
Nationwide, China has more than 60 million children in rural areas who are left with relatives, usually grandparents, as their parents seek better-paid jobs in cities.
More than 100,000 forgotten children in primary schools, have been equipped with the wristbands according to Liu Zhongping, Deputy Head of the Provincial Department of Civil Affairs.
The wristband is installed with a GPS locator and linked with local police databases, allowing children to report in case of emergency. These children are easy victims of tragedies such as murder, trafficking and suicide.
Zeng Ke, Deputy County Chief of Qianxi in Bijie city, said more than 8,000 left-behind children in primary schools in the county had obtained the wristbands.
