For more reactions from the Chinese side, let's hear from our reporter Guan Yang in Dandong, which borders the DPRK.
Guan Yang, how are locals reacting to the inter-Korean summit?
Paintings are one of the very few things that were not affected by the UN sanctions. Sun Yong is a private collector from Dandong who has dedicated 12 years to working with the culture of the DPRK. Sun has never stopped looking for the finest pieces. It's not a coincidence that some of the world's finest music and art are born during difficult times, like war. Sun thinks no matter what the situation turns out to be on the other side of the border, the glow in his gallery should never be dimmed.
SUN YONG PRIVATE ART COLLECTOR "My collection hasn't been affected by the sanctions at all. After years of working in this field, my gallery has become trusted in the DPRK art world. I have DPRK painters coming to my gallery and drawing all the time."
The ability of the artist to turn paint into feeling has been a source of wonder for many of Sun's visitors. Views can differ from person to person, but all these pieces from China's neighbor share one thing in common - they capture an experience in a living way.
SUN YONG PRIVATE ART COLLECTOR "Anywhere you go in world, you won't find another country like the DPRK where its artists always deliver positive messages in their works. You can feel the desire for a prosperous and colorful life in their pieces."
Dandong's border position has put it at the forefront of China's trade and interactions with the DPRK. But in the past several years, businesses here have run out of options as tensions grew on the Korean Peninsula.
GUAN YANG DANDONG, LIAONING PROVINCE After years of sanctions imposed on China's neighbor, Dandong really isn't the kind of bustling cross border trade hub it used to be. This is why people here are expecting the best outcomes from the historic talks between the DPRK and South Korea, as well as the possible upcoming US-DPRK summit.
CHEN YUE DANDONG RESIDENT "There are speculations that property prices at the border may jump up as a sign of the DPRK's possible economic transition."
YU YONGLI DANDONG RESIDENT "A peaceful peninsula is good for everybody. I think people's livelihood here depends on that."
An expert on Korean studies suggests, if the DPRK has already displayed sincerity on terminating the nuclear program, all parties involved should work together in making way for peace.
LYU CHAO DIRECTOR OF BORDER STUDY INSTITUTE LIAONING ACADEMY OF SOCIAL SCIENCES "It is a big step the DPRK has taken in making this announcement. I think countries like the US which have been strict in initiating and imposing sanctions should also give some positive responses, and the US-DPRK summit is a great opportunity to make a breakthrough."
